In some cases the issue was found after just 11,000 miles, but on average, a replacement was necessary at around 60,000 miles for vehicles that suffered from this problem. A common sign of a failed catalytic converter, aside from an illuminated check engine light, is if a rattle can be heard from beneath the vehicle when the car is on but not moving. What is happening is that the substrate, the internal part of the catalyst that reduces emissions, can loosen and bounce around inside the canister section of the converter. If this issue is ignored the substrate will eventually break down and reduce to a size that plugs the outlet hole, causing a sudden loss in power.
