Common Car Problems that Trigger the Check Engine Light

An illuminated check engine light doesn't necessarily mean that an automotive catastrophe is imminent. But it's still a good idea to get to the shop for computerized diagnostics so that any emerging issues can be taken care of before they get worse. At Automotion Service & Repair, our local mechanics use advanced diagnostic equipment to accurately identify car trouble. If your check engine light is on, come and see us so we can pinpoint the problem and then get right to work on repairing it.

What triggered my check engine light?

A bad catalytic converter is often to blame for an illuminated check engine light. Catalytic converter trouble should always be promptly addressed so that your vehicle isn't excessively polluting. Signs of a faulty catalytic converter include dark exhaust smoke, decreasing gas mileage, and a sulphurous odor. It's possible that a bad O2 sensor will trigger the light and also cause issues with the catalytic converter. The mass airflow sensor is another sensor that could cause the check engine light to illuminate. A failing MAF sensor could cause your engine to struggle to start. It could also cause your engine to hiccup as you drive along.

Old, malfunctioning spark plugs could also cause the light to come on. Cars made in the past twenty years can often make it 100,000 miles before spark plugs need to be changed out, while older automobiles usually need plugs replaced more regularly. Ignition coil problems could also trigger the light. Symptoms of ignition coil trouble include misfiring and rough idling. And, though it might seem bizarre, a poorly-fitting gas cap could cause the check engine light to turn on. It's important that your gas cap is always on tightly so that fuel doesn't have the opportunity to evaporate before you put it to use.
